National links

drugs.gov.uk

drugs.gov.uk is the cross-government website to support the National Drugs Strategy and the work of Drug Action Teams. It is a one-stop shop for DATs and interested individuals to find out about the government's ten-year strategy.

Department of Health

The drugs misuse information website is operated by the Department of Health as a resource for a wide range of professionals and managers to help in the delivery of drug prevention and treatment services. Some of the information will also be of interest to parents, young people and students.

DrugScope

DrugScope was created through the merger of the Institute for the Study of Drug Dependence (ISDD) and the Standing Conference on Drug Abuse (SCODA). Its aim is to inform policy and reduce drug-related risk. It provides quality information, promotes effective responses to drug taking, undertakes research at local, national and international level, advises on policy-making, encourages informed debate and speaks for its member bodies working on the ground.

Alcohol Concern

Alcohol Concern is the national agency on alcohol misuse which works both to reduce the costs of alcohol misuse and to develop the range and quality of helping services available to problem drinkers and their families throughout England and Wales.

Release

Release operates a number of service programmes including: 24 hour helpline - Legal Service - Training - Education and Information Materials - Conferences and Events - Expert Evidence - Drugs in School Helpline.

VSA reports

St Georges Hospital Medical School Public Health Sciences department produces regular reports on Volatile Substance Abuse.

Substance Misuse Management in General Practice

Substance Misuse Management in General Practice is a developing network to support GPs and other members of the primary health care team who work with substance misuse. The network produces the Substance Misuse Management in General Practice newsletter (SMMGP), and organises the annual conference 'Managing Drug Users in General Practice'.

Re-Solv

Re-Solv is the Society for the Prevention of Solvent and Volatile Substance Abuse.

Addiction Today

Addiction Today is a UK magazine devoted to recovery from addiction. Articles include therapeutic techniques, lists of self-help groups and treatment centres, details of seminars and workshops for professionals and people in recovery, research, news, complementary medicines, legislation, etc.

Parents Against Drug Abuse

Parents Against Drug Abuse (PADA) is an umbrella organisation of groups for the parents and families of drug users. All offer support to parents of drug users and many offer a range of services including education in schools, parent education, and prison visiting.

The Childrens Society

The Childrens Society is a children's charity founded in 1881. It works through over 100 projects throughout England and Wales, some of which deal with drug and alcohol use.

National Childrens Bureau

The National Childrens Bureau is a children's charity which promotes the interests and well-being of all children and young people across every aspect of their lives. It also hosts the Drug Education Forum (see next).

The Drug Education Forum is made up of national organisations which have drug education as a primary activity or offer a service to those who provide drug education.

National Drug Prevention Alliance

The National Drug Prevention Alliance is a network of concerned citizens and prevention professionals who believe that drug-free healthy lifestyles will protect and enhance society and its stability for present and future generations. NDPA promotes effective policies, including prevention, education, intervention, treatment and legal processes.

Centre for Research on Drugs and Health Behaviour

The Centre for Research on Drugs and Health Behaviour researches into reducing harms from substance use. Key themes are risk and risk behaviour, the risk environment, social and community interventions, treatment processes, and the dynamics of drug using populations. It has major involvement in research and intervention support in developing and transitional countries.

Locate & ResourceNet

Locate & ResourceNet is a combination of two services commissioned by the Department of Health to provide evaluations of drug prevention activities and information about materials available to support drug prevention and education.

Anytown Alcohol & Drug Advisory Service offers care and support to people who use drugs, alcohol and tranquillisers, and may have associated mental health problems.
