Drug Action Teams were established by the government in 1995 to ensure the strategic co-ordination of local action against drug misuse. The DAT is responsible for defining and monitoring a strategic framework to tackle substance misuse in line with the National Drug Strategy.
With the support of the Drugs Prevention Advisory Service, the key role of the DAT is to monitor the delivery and impact of the strategy. The DAT sets its strategic plan based on the action plans of other strategic groups (Crime and Disorder, Youth Justice Board, Connexions, etc.), Government priorities and the locally defined action plans of the Drug Reference Groups.
The DAT reports back directly to the UK Anti-Drugs Coordination Unit (UKADCU) at the Home Office via Annual Plans and Annual Reports: what we plan to do, what we have already done and performance against defined targets to measure impact, ie how we are doing
